208 gamers descended on Warhammer World bringing forces of Space Marine Bikes, Vyper Jetbikes, Ork Wartrakks and numerous other units and vehicles. As expected, it was a slightly chaotic weekend of fun games where a wide range of players met to do battle with fathers, sons, wives, partners and friends as allies. OK, you could only have one ally, but all of the mentioned partnerships were there.

Day one and the schedule set a brisk pace; with barely enough time to catch breath, get a drink from Bugman's and discuss the result of the last round. During the lunch break on day one, the armies were carefully scrutinised to decide the nominations for the best army award. Then we were back to the games adding to the fun atmosphere as the chatting continued from the moment the first game kicked off until the quiz started in the evening. Then Adam Troke kept players talking, responding to questions about the development of the Warhammer 40,000 game and the armies available in a seminar for all players.

Day two and bleary-eyed players returned from nights-out or early nights in their hotel rooms. Slowly at first, they began to come alive and the pace of the games gained momentum. The Best Army nominations were laid out during lunch on Sunday and all the players had their chance to look closely at the armies and pick their favourite. It was a close one, but in the end the husband and wife team of Andrew and Nicola Taylor came through with their Imperial force known as the "Hands of the Emperor".

After 364 games there rose from the mound of results cards and feedback forms the hand of an administration assistant clasping a piece of paper with the muffled cry of "here are the final scores" emanating from the pile of paper on the stage.

Congratulations to Michael Purvis and Tony Burgess for battling through with their Eldar to top spot. If you want to try playing in a doubles tournament why don't you try out our Conflict Regional Tournaments in Glasgow, Bolton and London this year. Or you could hang on until January 2007 when Warhammer World welcomes another 200 players to the Warhammer 40,000 Doubles Tournament.

WARHAMMER 40,000 DOUBLES TOURNAMENT REVIEW

Neil: The Doubles Tournament has always intrigued me – the smaller, fast and furious games are a world away from my normal Grand Tournament weekends (some may remember my Pink Tyranids). This year I finally decided to attend along with my friend, fellow GW staffer and member of Flame On! (a tournament team comprised of Manchester and Stockports Veteran gamers), Ade Roberts. We had decided against a more powerful Viper/Land Speeder-based army and instead went for an interesting mix of Chaos Space Marines and Lost and the Damned. The plan was for 7 fun games, not expecting to win but hoping to get nominated for Best Army. Unfortunately disaster struck Ade and he was too ill to attended, so after a frantic few hours texting the guys, Jimmy Balderstone stepped forward to take his place.

Our first game saw us pitted against a combined force of Tau and 13th Company (The Wasters). After watching our Spawn fail 4 Stupidity test in a row (Ld 9!!!) Most of our forces had been blasted by the Tau. Only Jimmy's Traitor Guard unit did us proud, killing a unit of Grey Slayers, Wulfen and a Wolf Priest in combat! Go Guard! 7-13. We then faced an all-Tau force in game 2. Despite my Plaguebearers being massacred in combat against Fire Warriors, our forces managed to gain a solid 13pts for Flame On! Next up it was White Dwarf's very own Owen Rees and his friend, Jonathan, with their combined Witch Hunters force. A very bloody game resulted in nearly all their forces been wiped out in a massed combat. Swiftly we moved on to our last game of the day vs. Necrons. Though we managed to kill all their immortals in turn 1 there was little we could do against the massed guass fire and our forces took a 7-13 pounding.

After a little too much boisterous mirth on Saturday evening, we were back for the second day's gaming. Game six and we were facing off against the "Petrified Lemmings" massed Killer Kan and Trukk borne Ork horde. Six very hard-fought turns later and it all came down to one last Chaos Space Marine armour save. We failed it and ended up getting massacred. Keen to exact some revenge, we faced our next opponents – a mix of Tau and Scythes of the Emperor. After some severe battering in the first turns, we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a combined charge of my Plaguebearers and Jimmy's now glorious game-winning Traitor Guard. It ended 17-3 to us but could have easily been the other way round. Every now and then you face a true mismatch of armies – our last game was one such event. Against an all Ravager/Raider Dark Eldar army we had little hope and promptly got massacred.

At the end of the second day, the occupants of the Great Hall eagerly await the results to see who will be the 2005-06 Warhammer 40,000 Doubles Champions.

Our final placing was 56th, not bad for an untested army, and though we never got nominated for Best Army it was still well worth it. Jimmy and I set off back to Manchester, busily hatching our plans or next year after enjoying a fun and relaxed weekend, a nice change from our usual Grand Tournaments and one we'll see you all at next year.
