Know Your Foe: Tyranids
RECOGNISING TYRANID BIOMORPHS

Page: 1|2

Regenerate
Reinforced Chitin
Scuttlers
Spine Banks

REGENERATE

What It Does:
At the start of each Tyranid turn, a surviving model with Regenerate rolls a D6 for each Wound it has lost - for each 6 rolled, that creature regains 1 lost Wound up to its starting total.

REINFORCED CHITIN †

What It Does:
Tyranids with reinforced chitin gain +1 Wound.

SCUTTLERS ‡

What It Does:
Tyranids with the scuttlers biomorph may Scout as described on p. 75 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.

SPINE BANKS

What It Does:
A model with spine banks counts as having frag grenades in close combat and can release a spray of spines with the same effect as a spinefist in the Shooting phase, in addition to any other weapons used.

Spore Cysts
Symbiote Rippers
Thornback
Toxic Miasma

SPORE CYSTS*

What It Does:
A creature with spore cysts that is not in base contact with the enemy may produce a Toxic Spore Mine in the Shooting phase in addition to any other shooting.

SYMBIOTE RIPPERS †

What It Does:
These are represented by extra Rippers glued to a creature's base. When in close combat, add one to the unit's size for each Ripper-infested base (after any other modifiers).

THORNBACK

What It Does:
A thornbacked creature counts as double the number of models for the purposes of outnumbering if it is on the winning side in a close combat.

TOXIC MIASMA †

What It Does:
Any creature being attacked by, or directing its attacks towards, a Tyranid with toxic miasma reduces its WS by 1.

Toxin Sacs
Tusked
Winged
* Truncated description - go to page 32-33 of Codex: Tyranids to read the unabridged rules.
† Model left unpainted to show one way to make this biomorph conversion.
‡ Scuttlers should be modelled appropriately so the opposing player will recognise the biomorph.
We hope this article helps you in unraveling the complex DNA strands that make up the dreaded Tyranid species. Have fun!

TOXIN SACS

What It Does:
A Tyranid with toxin sacs gains +1 Strength to its profile.

TUSKED

What It Does:
Tusked Tyranids gain +2 Attacks when charging instead of the normal +1.

WINGED*

What It Does:
Winged Tyranids are treated as Jump Infantry. A winged model may not have the leaping or extended carapace biomorphs.

Previous: 'Acid Maw' through to 'Scythe Tail'.
