his army's success comes from the Vampire Lord's ability to cast Invocation of Nehek on Skeletons with a roll of a 3+, enabling you to make your two starting units massive. He has access to a minimum of 7 power dice, and it's likely that your opponent won't try to dispel too many of your spells in the early turns as he is saving his Dispel Scrolls for the really nasty stuff later on. By Turns 3 and 4, you can concentrate on keeping your units fully stocked and moving them into flanks...repeatedly.
The other characters fill loads of roles too. The Vampire on foot chases after squishy missile troops and war machines and is fairly safe from missile fire as enemies will be at least -3 To Hit, and can be at -5 or -6 if charging out of cover! The Battle Standard Bearer is the "hard as nails" guy, with 3 Strength 7 Attacks benefiting from re-rolls, and a +2 bonus to combat results. He is quite capable of going through whole units of knights on his own.
The Vampire Lord and the Necromancer orchestrate the whole thing from the smallest Skeleton unit, deployed just behind the front line. Use the Crown of Commandment to give a unit Weapon Skill 7 when and where needed. And, of course, the Dire Wolves and Fell Bats interfere with the enemy advance to make sure your units don't get charged by multiple flanking units.
