In the dread-laden lands of Sylvania east of the Empire, the Vampire Counts have been content for many years to bide their time and gather their strength for an assault upon the lands of the living. In the quiet, haunted castles of that dark realm, the Vampires have plotted and schemed, content that the Empire has had too many threats to face to consider a purge of the evil that rests in Sylvania. With the arrival of the Storm of Chaos, foreign Chaotic warriors marched their way through Sylvanian land on their way to Middenheim. Vampires will brook no trespass and so mustered their hordes to combat the forces of Chaos. Thus, the Vampire Counts incidentally worked to protect the Empire as they defend their own lands and slowed the advance of Archaon's armies.

On its own lands, the Army of Sylvania fights slightly differently than the forces of the Vampire Counts that have attacked the Empire for generations. The Vampires use a spell called From Death Awakened to raise the dead from the many graves that litter the Sylvanian landscape, and the von Carstein Vampires exhibit heretofore unknown powers. Aside from the von Carstein Vampires, Wight Lords, and Wraiths who lead the army, a Sylvanian force can include up to two Bat Swarms, Dire Wolves, Fell Bats, Spirit Hosts, Grave Guard, up to two Black Coaches, Drakenhof Templars (Black Knights), and Banshees. Also included are a few new troop types: a Skeleton Militia that can opt for halberds and crossbows, Zombie Levies who can use armour and weapons, Drakenhof Guard which are Grave Guard with great weapons and full plate armour, and special Dire Wolves with the Scouts special rule.
