MAKING SIMPLE POOLS

Pools share a lot of modelling tricks that are used in making swamps. In fact they are pretty much the same thing, but with different coloured water! Follow the simple steps here and you'll soon be up to your neck in pools!

Step OneStep Two

1

A roughly oval-shaped piece of board was cut and the edges filed and sanded. A piece of foam was then cut to match the shape of the board. The centre of the foam was then removed and the remaining foam was glued down and shaped with a sharp hobby knife.

2

Filler putty was then used to fill any gaps between the foam and the board. Once dry it was sanded with a fine grade sandpaper, to smooth out any rough edges.

3

Small stones were glued down with liquid nails and then the piece is coated in wood glue. Sprinkle sand and gravel over the foam and board and allowed to dry.

4

Once dry, the swamp is sprayed with black primer. Ensure the wood glue and gravel cover the entire piece before spraying as the primer will dissolve expose areas of foam. The swamp was then drybrushed with a series of different colours. The raised areas were drybrushed successively with Bestial Brown, Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone. Now, just paint the water inside!

Here are two examples of simple pools. Your pool can be stagnant and green like the one on the left, or it can look a bit more pure like the one on the right. Clear resin was poured into these pools for the water effect. However a just as pleasing result can be obtained by painting the water whatever colour you wish and then laying down a heavy coat of Gloss Varnish.
