Warhammer Skirmish
Egg Hunt

When Warhammer Skirmish was released on the Games Workshop website, the Web Team ask two of the Promotions Office staff to play the "Egg Hunt" scenario.

Rule The Roost

Ken KennedyKEN KENNEDY - GRIFFON AND YOUNG:

"Brawk! Brawk! My babies; my precious babies!"

As the player controlling the Griffin and her two young, I'm really at the mercy of Jeff's egg raiders. To win this scenario, I've got to successfully react to his strategies as opposed to setting and following my own. Although I'd really like to take out the major threats first, those being the hero and the wizard, I will probably have trouble keeping the rest of his troops from running off with my eggs. At the very least, I want to punish the Empire soldiers that violate my nest and threaten my hatchlings. I hope I win so that I can feed my babies; human innards are a Griffin delicacy!

Jeff KeyserJEFF KEYSER - EMPIRE EGG THIEVES:

I tried to choose the forces I thought were best-suited to accomplish the mission at hand. Firstly, I chose a brave Captain of the Empire to serve as a leader to the raiding party. I would need his skill in close combat and his superior Leadership would hopefully keep the men from fleeing in panic once they caught sight of the Griffon. I equipped him with a pistol, this would add to his strength in close combat but also grant him a long range attack capability. Secondly, I added a Level 1 Battle Wizard; he would be my ace-in-the-hole. I chose the Lore of Fire spell Fireball as a nasty surprise for the creature.

Egg thievesNow it was time to muster my hardy band of raiders. I selected several Spearmen as they are some of the most hardcore Empire troops. These would act as a bodyguard for the Captain and do most of the fighting. Next, I recruited a small band of Handgunners and a Crossbowman to serve as long range support for the nest-raiders. I imagined them spotting the Griffon from far off and firing upon it as it returned to the mountain top, thus alerting the raiders as they crept slowly towards the nest. Finally, I chose as many Free Company soldiers as I could afford, decent fighters in their own right but I planned for them to go after the eggs while the real fighters kept the great beast at bay.

JEFF KEYSER - DEPLOYMENT:

Knowing that his nest raiders had to start on one of the table edges, Jeff decided that he'd arrive on the eastern side of the table. That way he'd have a direct shot to the Griffon's nest and thereby bypassing the nasty impassable rocks on the southern side of the hill and the fallen tree trunks along the northern slope.

NOTE: For this battle report we decided to use what we had on hand for scenery. The rocks were just large pebbles from the roadside that were sprinkled along the slope. The "fallen logs" are actually short pieces of straw, but twigs from under trees around your home will work just as well!

Jeff's Level 1 Wizard and the Crossbowman started close to the southeastern copse of trees. These would provide cover from which the Wizard could loose his mighty Fireball while the Crossbowman protected him with quarrel fire. The Captain of this perilous expedition commanded his Spearmen to form up near the centre of the table edge. The members of the Free Company split into two groups, setting up on either side of the Spearmen and their Captain. Lastly, two Handgunners and an additional Spearman set up at the northernmost tip of the east table edge.

KEN KENNEDY - DEPLOYMENT:

Ken started off with only the Griffon's hatchlings on the table, which had to stay within the protection of the nest at the centre of the table. Inquisitive by nature, the hatchlings couldn't help but strain their necks above the crown of the nest to see what odd creatures were making so much noise.
