Seasons of War
A WARHAMMER SCENARIO FOR THE WOOD ELVES

A winter battle between the Wood Elves and the UndeadThe source of much of the Wood Elves' formidable power is the natural world, as embodied by Athel Loren. This source of power comes with a catch, however: nature is cyclical. Thus, the battlefield prowess of the Wood Elves depends heavily upon the season. Unfortunately for them, those who wish harm upon the forest do not attack when conditions are best. Can the Wood Elves stand regardless of the season?

Glade Guard in winter garbARMIES

See the Seasons special rule below to determine the army composition guidelines. The goal of this scenario is to have fun experiencing the advantages and disadvantages of fighting throughout the four seasons. Feel free to tweak the points balance as you go to accommodate these unusual conditions.

BATTLEFIELD

This battle takes place on the edge of Athel Loren (funny how most Wood Elf battles take place there). Set up the battlefield as described in the "Woodland Ambush" scenario on pp. 76-77 of Warhammer Armies: Wood Elves.

DEPLOYMENT

Unlike "Woodland Ambush," the Wood Elves are the Defenders in this scenario as the changing seasons have blinded them to this new threat. Thus, the Wood Elves deploy outside what's labelled "Defender's Deployment Zone" on the map for "Woodland Ambush" on p. 77. They cannot deploy within 6" of this zone. The Attacker deploys anywhere within that 12"-wide zone. Next, the Defender deploys any Scouts he may have, and then the Attacker deploys his.

The Attacker goes first.

LENGTH OF GAME

This game lasts 6 turns. Obviously, if you find you're having more fun with this challenge, you can continue well beyond that limit.

SPECIAL RULES

Seasons. Unlike normal games of Warhammer, the seasons play a dramatic role in this scenario. Consult the chart below to see how the Wood Elves and the Attackers fare under these conditions.

To decide what season it is for your game, you have three options. First, you can agree on a season like civilised gamers. Second, you can roll-off like the rest of us poor slobs to decide who picks the season. Third, you can roll a D6 and re-roll any 5s or 6s. If you get a 1, play spring; 2, play summer; 3, play fall; or 4, play winter.

SEASON
WOOD ELF IMPACT
ATTACKER IMPACT
Spring
Spring
  • While the trees thaw and bud, their power returns slowly. All units with the Forest Spirit special rule have their maximum movement reduced by 1/6 (round down), and their Strength value reduced by 1.
  • The fresh boughs of spring make for very resilient bows. Add 6" to the maximum shooting distance.
  • The soft earth has slowed the movement of your forces. Reduce all maximum movement distances by 1/6 (round down).
  • The lack of foliage makes it easier to spot and shoot the protectors of the forest. Forests do not count as soft cover.
Horizontal Rule
Summer
Summer
  • The Wood Elves are at their strongest and most plentiful in summer. All units with the Forest Spirit get a unit Champion for free.
  • The sun and rain have given your forces plenty of nutrition, be they plant, Elf, or somewhere between. All your units gain +1 Strength when charging.
  • You picked a bad time to attack Athel Loren, buddy. The dense foliage shifts in the wind, making it hard to shoot. All your forces suffer -1 to hit with missile weapons.
  • The heat and humidity of summer have ground down the morale of your army. All your forces suffer a -1 to their Leadership.
Horizontal Rule
Autumn
Autumn
  • The trees prepare for winter, and their power wanes. All units with the Forest Spirit special rule have their maximum movement reduced by 1/6 (round down), and their Strength value reduced by 1.
  • The fallen leaves give the Wood Elves plenty of natural cover for ambushes. Glade Guard upgrading to Scouts get the Forest Stalker special rule at no additional cost, and you may deploy +1 Scout units.
  • The dryness of the forest makes it very flammable right now, which is great for the Attackers. All units with the Forest Spirit special rule also have to take the Flammable special rule from p. 114 of the Warhammer rulebook. Flame on!
  • It's harvest time, and your forces are well fed from pillaging. All your units gain +1 Strength.
Horizontal Rule
Winter
Winter
  • Wood Elves are sluggish in the cold of winter. Reduce all maximum movement distances by 1/3 (round down).
  • The trees are shut down for winter. You can't take any units with the Forest Spirit special rule.
  • All your Armour Saves are reduced by 1 down to a minimum of no saves at all.
  • The snow makes marching tricky. Reduce all maximum movement distances by 1/6 (round down).
  • The lack of foliage makes it easier to shoot. Forests do not count as soft cover.
  • The Attackers have lost many soldiers to the elements. Reduce the Attacker's army points size by 10% after you agree upon the game's point limit.
