Highborn on Giant Stag
WOOD ELVES HIGHBORN PAINTING MASTERCLASS

Longtime hobbyist and master painter Jeff Wilson was kind enough to let us photograph and display his beautifully painted Wood Elf Highborn on Giant Stag. The model features a few minor conversions and is seated upon an evocative scenic base. Jeff has quite the soft-spot for Wood Elves, and it shows through his excellent work! Click any of the images below to learn from Jeff Wilson himself how he achieved each particular effect.

Saddle, Ropes and Skulls: For the saddle, I basecoated it with a mix of Chaos Black, Scorched Brown, and Graveyard Earth. I highlighted this coat with an even mix of Scorched Brown and Graveyard Earth, and kept adding in Codex Grey for a series of successive highlights. Then, I washed the saddle with a 5:2:3:2 mix of water to Brown Ink to Purple Ink to a floor wax solution I use to keep the ink from pooling in the recesses (liquid soap will do the same trick).

Fore the ropes, I basecoated with a mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey, and then I highlighted by adding in more Codex Grey to that mix followed by Fortress Grey. Finally, I used straight Fortress Grey as a final highlight.

For the skulls, I basecoated with Bestial Brown followed by successive layers of Bestial Brown mixed with more and more Bleached Bone. Then, I used an even mix of Skull White and Bleached Bone for a highlight, followed by straight Skull White.

Leather, Scale Cloak and Rune: For the leather areas, I basecoated with a mix of Bestial Brown and Graveyard Earth. Next, I worked up to pure Graveyard Earth, and then added in Kommando Khaki until I was up to straight khaki. Next, I washed these areas with a diluted mix of Flesh Wash and Purple Ink.

For the scale cloak, I based it with a mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown. Then, I applied straight Scorched Brown, followed by an even mix of Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown, and then a Bestial Brown highlight. I edged each scale with a mix of Bestial Brown and Bleached Bone. I washed the cloak with the same wash as the leather.

For the runes, I painted them with Chaos Black and embossed them with a mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey.

Spear, Wood and Feathers: I basecoated the feathers with Graveyard Earth and worked my way up by blending in Bleached Bone. Then, I hit them with a watered-down Flesh Wash, touched up the feathers with Bleached Bone, and added a final edging of a mix of Skull White and Bleached Bone.

For the spear tip, I basecoated with a mix of Dark Angels Green and Chaos Black, followed by straight Dark Angels Green. I kept adding in Skull White to the green to work it up to almost pure white.

For the wood haft, I basecoated with a mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black. I lined in the wood grain with straight Scorched Brown, then with a mix of Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown, followed by straight Bestial Brown.

Antlers: I replaced the original antlers with bitz from the Dryad sprue. It's the same branch, just bent backwards on the reverse side. I added other points to this limb along with a Green Stuff vine. I basecoated it with a mix of Scorched Brown and Graveyard Earth. Next, I highlighted with straight Graveyard Earth to mimic wood grain, which I then highlighted with a mix of Graveyard Earth and Kommando Khaki, followed by straight Kommando Khaki and then a little Bleached Bone.

Face Mask, Tongue and Eyes: I basecoated the Stag's face mask with a mix of Chaos Black and Catachan Green, and then I successively highlighted by adding in more Catachan Green. Next, I added in Kommando Khaki to this mix and kept doing so for more highlights. For the tongue, I painted it with a mix of Shadow Grey and Tentacle Pink, followed by a few layers of more Tentacle Pink added to that mix (followed by a coat of Gloss Varnish once the model was done). For the eyes, I painted them with Space Wolves Grey, washed them with watered-down Blue Ink, and dotted them with Skull White.

Mane and Underbelly: I basecoated these areas with an even mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown and Codex Grey. I then used the following even mixes or straight colours for highlights: Scorched Brown to Codex Grey, Codex Grey, Codex Grey to Bleached Bone, Codex Grey to Bleached Bone to Skull White, Fortress Grey to Skull White, and finally Skull White. I gave all of this the same wash as the fur, but with twice the amount of water and a little more Purple Ink.

Spites: I basecoated the Spites with Shadow Grey, and then applied a mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolves Grey, followed by straight Space Wolves Grey. Then, I added a layer of Space Wolves Grey mixed with Skull White. Once that dried, I washed the entire Spite with diluted Blue Ink and then touched it up with the same mix of Space Wolves Grey and Skull White. To finish, I gave it a final highlight of Skull White.

The Base: To build up the base, I used fine model railroad ballast, Games Workshop Modelling Flock, and made a tree stump out of Green Stuff. I topped it off with static grass, plastic plants, and leaf material from birch seed pods. I painted the stump with shades of grey and used a wash of Dark Green Ink, Black Ink, and Purple Ink to give it more of an organic look. I drybrushed the flock and static grass with Scorpion Green, followed by Bleached Bone for the grass. I basecoated the ballast Scorched Brown and drybrushed it with Graveyard Earth, followed by Bleached Bone. I painted the rocks just like the Lord's fur cloak and gave them a diluted Black and Dark Green Ink wash.

The Feather, Hooves and Fur: The long hair on the feet of horses is called the feather, and I basecoated these areas with a 3:1 mix of Dark Flesh to Bleached Bone. Then, I started lightening the mix with more Bleached Bone and added successive highlights. Then I mixed in Skull White until I got to a final highlight of straight Skull White.

For the hooves, I basecoated in stripes with a mix of Scorched Brown and Bleached Bone. Then, I kept adding in Bleached Bone for successive highlights, followed by a little Skull White. I used Gloss Varnish on the hooves after I finished the model.

For the fur, I basecoated it with a 1:2:2 mix of Chaos Black to Scorched Brown to Dark Flesh. Next, I highlighted with an even mix of Scorched Brown and Dark Flesh. To give it a shaggier appearance, I painted small lines of Dark Flesh to suggest a fur texture. I highlighted these lines with an even mix of Dark Flesh and Snakebite Leather, followed by straight Snakebite Leather. I washed the fur with a 4:2:1:2 mix of water to Brown Ink to Purple Ink to liquid soap to keep the ink from pooling. The purple sounds strange, but it really helps bring out the deepness of the browns.

Skin and Tattoos: I basecoated the Wood Elf's skin with Bestial Brown, and then I painted on an even mix of Bronzed Flesh and Bestial Brown, followed by a 2:1 mix of the same colours and so on until I got up to straight Bronzed Flesh. Then, I highlighted with an even mix of Bronzed Flesh and Elf Flesh, followed by 1:2 of the same, and then a layer of straight Elf Flesh. For a final highlight, I mixed Skull White with Elf Flesh. It was very important to keep my paint thin for these layers to avoid clumping. For the tattoos, I painted them with a thin coat of Dark Angels Green and highlighted them with a mix of Elf Flesh and Dark Angels Green.

Fur Cloak, Red Hair and Headdress: For the fur cloak, I worked up from a Shadow Grey-Chaos Black basecoat to straight Fortress Grey (with successive mixes in between). I finished it with a final highlight of Skull White.

For the Wood Elf's red hair, I basecoated it with Dark Flesh and then painted it with a mix of Dark Flesh and Fiery Orange. After two successive layers with more Fiery Orange in that mix, I washed the area with a thin mix of Chestnut Ink and Brown Ink. Finally, I highlighted with straight Fiery Orange and a mix of Fiery Orange and Bleached Bone.

For his headdress, I basecoated with a mix of Chaos Black and Dark Angels Green. For the next layer, I added a matching amount of Catachan Green, followed by an even mix of Dark Angels Green and Catachan Green. Keeping this mix, I started adding in Kommando Khaki to it for successive highlights. Once I was up to straight Kommando Khaki, I washed the headdress with a thinned mix of Black Ink and Dark Green Ink.

Green Clothing: For the Wood Elf's green clothing, I basecoated with a mix of Chaos Black and Dark Angels Green. For the next layer, I added a matching amount of Catachan Green, followed by an even mix of Dark Angels Green and Catachan Green. Keeping this mix, I started adding in Kommando Khaki to it for successive highlights. Once I was up to straight Kommando Khaki, I washed the green clothing with a thinned mix of Black Ink and Dark Green Ink. Then, I touched up any areas that needed it with a mix of Catachan Green and Kommando Khaki.

Silver, Gold, Vines and Quiver: For the silver areas, I basecoated them with Chainmail. Then, I painted the shadowed areas with thinned-down Boltgun Metal. I used Mithril Silver for highlighting, and then gave the area a watered-down wash of Purple Ink mixed with Blue Ink. Finally, I touched up the areas with Chainmail and Mithril Silver after the wash dried.

For the gold, I basecoated with Burnished Gold, and then hit the areas with thinned Flesh Wash. I touched up the surfaces with Burnished Gold, and then highlighted with Shining Gold and Mithril Silver. I applied a final highlight of a mix of Skull White and Mithril Silver.

I gave the vines a basecoat of Dark Angels Green and then highlighted up in layers. First I used Snot Green, then Scorpion Green, and finally a mix of Scorpion Green and Skull White. Next, I gave all the vines a wash of diluted Dark Green Ink, which I then touched up with straight Scorpion Green.

For his quiver, I replaced the existing one with a quiver from a Goblin sprue. I painted this new quiver with a succession of grey shades ending with Fortress Grey.
