TACTICS TO USE AGAINST WOOD ELVES
Having written many tactica articles for the Wood Elves, Ken Kennedy returns, this time to share some thoughts and ideas about how to fight and win against the capricious inhabitants of Athel Loren.
I've already written several articles on the topic of how to win with the new Wood Elves. Now, it's time to talk about how to fight against them and maybe defeat the protectors of Athel Loren. As we've already pointed out, the latest version of the Wood Elves are very different from their predecessors — your old tactics might not work against them. This article is here to help you update your anti-Wood Elf tactics.
If you've had the chance to look through the new Wood Elf Army book, you've gotten a sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the Wood Elves. However, if you really want to beat these woodland menaces, you need to fully understand these characteristics and exploit them as best you can with your army.
STRENGTHS
The key strengths of the Wood Elf army include manoeuvrability, expert missile fire, excellent delay capability, a variety of Fear-causing units, and access to the powerful Forest Spirit troops. If you've been playing against Wood Elf armies for the last few months, you can probably add a few more strengths to that list. However, one important thing to keep in mind is that no Wood Elf force can field all of these strengths at once. For example, if they spend a lot of points on missile troops, they won't have much left for rugged Forest Spirits or mobile Glade Riders and Warhawk Riders. If you can determine what strength your Wood Elf opponent is focussing upon, you will know that he won't be able to stray too far from that path. That allows you to tune your army and shape your tactics to counter that threat.
WEAKNESSES
Every Warhammer army has weaknesses, and the Wood Elves are no exception. Some of the more noticeable weaknesses of the Wood Elves are their expensive troops along with their lack of armour and Toughness. They also have very few units that can get a rank bonus for combat resolution and only a few more units that can actually negate an opponent's rank bonus in a close combat. These weaknesses are definitely chinks in the Wood Elf armour that can be exploited by a canny general.
